Bipartisan bill from Reps. Schmidt and Scholten advances out of the House Small Business Committee, MSCC's second major initiative in less than a week since launch

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Main Street Competition Coalition (MSCC) today applauded the unanimous, bipartisan passage of the Main Street Competes Act (H.R. 8882) out of the House Small Business Committee. Introduced by Reps. Derek Schmidt (R-KS-02) and Hillary Scholten (D-MI-03), the legislation would refocus the Small Business Administration on promoting competitive markets, enhancing consumer choice, and encouraging business ownership, including by directing the SBA's Office of Advocacy to evaluate how effectively federal antitrust enforcement protects small businesses from anticompetitive conduct.

"This is an exciting development for Main Street," said Chris Jones, Executive Director of the Main Street Competition Coalition. "We are grateful to the House Small Business Committee for advancing this important bipartisan legislation. Less than a week after our Coalition launched and urged Congress to take small business competition seriously, lawmakers on both sides of the aisle are answering the call quickly, and that's good news for small businesses, family farms, and consumers across the country."

The Coalition sent this letter this morning to House Small Business Committee in support of the bill, writing that "rigorous enforcement of U.S. antitrust laws is critical to preserving competitive markets, empowering small businesses to compete, and preventing dominant players from undermining competition and free enterprise."

MSCC commended Chairman Roger Williams (R-TX), Ranking Member Nydia Velázquez (D-NY), and the bill sponsors for their bipartisan leadership in advancing the legislation.
